- Plan ahead! Don’t leave it to the last minute to request the dial before you dig plans.
- Get hard copies as well as email versions of the plans
- Always request a larger area than the direct area you are working on. A good rule of thumb is at minimum double your work area.
- Sign up as an online member. It’s fast. And it makes it so much easier to get your 1100 before you dig plans.
- If you have multiple work sites relatively close to each other do a dial before you dig for each site as well as an overall 1100 search.
- Use the online 1100 service to locate your work area on a map. Use the drawing tools to highlight your working area – remember Tip 3!
- Pinpoint your worksite on the map – this helps ensure all relevant information is sent to you.
- Write comments and descriptions that you think will help the Dial before you dig team. Include information on the type of work you are carrying out and what equipment will be used
- Write down the job number, if using the online service it is on the top right of the Job Summary at step 4 of 4. If you are using the phone service ask the operator for the job number. This makes it easier to follow up later on and speeds things up.
- Print off the list of asset owners and their contact details. These are the companies that have services in the area you working in. Include these numbers in your emergency response plan.
EXAMPLE dial before you dig:
So if you are working on a construction site on the corner of two roads building a new commercial property the site is approximately 30 metres long by 20 metres wide and you are only connecting into existing services at the boundary. You would ask for a 100m radius from the corner. It is always best to pick a slightly larger radius than you think you will need as this gives you a better overall picture of what services are in the area. The operator will then offer to post out hard copies of the plans or email them. It is best to get both.
